BuddyPress.org

For a while now, I’ve been running a community site using WordPress and bbPress. Given that I allow any user to create an account and write blog posts on the WordPress side, as well as post to the bbPress-powered forums, I’m thinking it might make sense to upgrade the whole thing to BuddyPress, which seems better designed for what I’m doing.

But I have some questions before proceeding. Mainly, I’m concerned about what will happen to my bbPress forums. Will those be folded into the BuddyPress installation as individual groups? My concern here is that my users frequently use the forums for play-by-post role-playing games and they have a lot of links between forum threads as a result. It would be a real pain if those links had to break during the upgrade process. If the links would break, is it possible to leave bbPress running as a set of forums even after the rest of the site is updated to BuddyPress?
