Switching to WPMU, and adding Buddypress

I have a site on WordPress: http://www.Padosa.com.
I want to add Buddypress to replace vbulletin.
Before I commit by switching to WPMU, a few questions just to confirm I am doing the right thing:
– all I have found suggests that the consolidation and WP and WPMU is down the road – it is not imminent?
– what are the downsides of switching to WPMU? I don’t need for users to create blogs – just need to use buddypress. Any issues with plugins?
– how quirky is buddypress?
Any feedback on making the transition is most appreciated!
