Themes or Styles for Member Pages in BP 1.1.2

    @jstanard

    I’m using WPMU 2.8.5.2 and have just installed BP 1.1.2. For this project we are not going to allow users (registered members) to create blogs and we’re not using forums so I have these components disabled under BP.

    I have noticed that the use of two themes — one for the main blog and one for the BP pages — has been discontinued. I read the article about parent/child themes and I think I understood that, but I think the child themes approach is only relevant to my project if we were going to have a bunch of sub-blogs and wanted to apply individual themes to them, which is not the case here.

    What I do need to be able to do is have a “theme” or design for the BP members pages that is NOT the same as the main theme that I have selected the site under the WPMU tools.

    In the earlier version of BP I was able to select a theme for the BP pages from a drop-down in the General Settings screen. That drop-down has apparently been eliminated in BP 1.1.2.

    It seems that the new default functionality is that the BP pages will use the same theme as set within WPMU. However, I need to have those pages look very different from the default theme. I haven’t been able to find any posts or articles that address this.

    So, does anyone know of a way for me to deploy a different “theme” or design for my BP pages under BP 1.1.2?

    You can still use the old “bp-themes” format (for now anyway) as long as you haven’t deleted the “bp-themes” directory.

    I’ve quoted the following from:

    https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/upgrading-a-buddypress-1-0-theme-for-buddypress-1-1/

    Firstly you can revert to the old BuddyPress 1.0 theme system. Simply recover your /wp-content/bp-themes/ folder. This will revert BuddyPress into compatibility mode. You will not see all of the new features added in 1.1, but you will gain from performance and code improvements.

    But be advised that, from what I’ve heard, the old 2-way theme format is going be phased out eventually in a future BP release.

    I would recommend making your own parent/child theme and use the bp-sn-parent as your guide.

    To truly get the mileage you want out of your BuddyPress powered website, you will want to customize it fully. The parent/child setup is designed to let the parent theme be the “core” theme, and let child themes change the core design. You could also just make your own child theme and use bp-sn-parent as the parent, and then use your own custom CSS to make it look however you’d like.

    you can also check out my bp 1.1.2 theme. it’s a basic rework of andy’s and still needs a lot of tlc, but it might clue you in on how to style some elements and get you the look you want. i’ll probably wind up creating something entirely different down the road, but this might help in the mean while — http://code.google.com/p/avenuek9-bp-theme/downloads/list
