Tweaking a plugin using a language file

I recently Installed “BuddyPress Links” which is a grate plug-in.
However I’d like to rename the menu link it creates from “Links” to “Media”. I seem to have read somewhere that rather than modifying the plug-in source code it is safer to create a new language file with these custom changes. Could someone walk me through how I would go about doing this?
