update group meta upon group creation

I am working on my group categories plugin and I don’t know how to organize users picking which category their new group belongs to. I don’t want it to be a whole step like the BP Group Extension makes it because the problem is the way buddypress is designed new groups are created and added to the database after the first group creation step.
If a user only does the first creation step and then goes to a new page then the group meta for my plugin is never set. In order for all the features in my plugin to work the meta must be set for each group. Is there anyway to add my creation step at the end of the first creation step… like right below where the user enters the description for the group? .. Anyone have any ideas?
