Uploaded member avatars show up as broken images

I am running BuddyPress 1.0.2 on a WPMU 2.7.1 installation. The site is http://blogpeoria.com
The avatars that members upload are not showing up anyplace other than their profile pages.
For example: On this member’s site: http://hipkat.blogpeoria.com the avatar he is trying to display in the sidebar on his site is broken. The image is supposed to be: “http://blogpeoria.com/avatar/blog-1963-128.png”
But there is no “avatar” folder, http://blogpeoria.com/avatar/
I found the avatar folder with this image seems to be located at
“wp-content/avatars/blog/c21/blog-1963-128.png”
Member’s uploaded avatars are not displaying in comments or in the sitewide recent comments or sitewide recently updates blogs either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
