Use bp-default theme for development – advantages, disadvantages

Hi everyone.
What would be the advantages and disadvantages of creating a child theme using bp-default rather than to allow BuddyPress to work automatically on my current child theme?
Allowing buddypress to work automatically on any theme adds all the BuddyPress features. Other than the styles, I don’t notice anything different between the two.
I would prefer it to run on my own theme, add my own CSS, and for any other changes, use filters and action hooks in functions.php/a plugin file. Unless people can convince me that using bp-default would be a better option.
Any help appreciated.
