Use 'load more' on activity page to load posts on home page

The ‘Load more’ button on the activity page is a great piece of functionality, allowing users to load more activity without a page refresh.
I would like to implement the same functionality on my site’s home page to load more posts. Is it possible to do this? How would I go about it?
I’ve tried using plugins such as Infinite Scroll and Jetpack without success. I thought as it’s possible on another part of the site via BuddyPress there might be a more straightforward way of doing it.
Perhaps this is something that could be considered for inclusion in a future version of the BuddyPress default theme?
