user sending private message to users not his friend

A user on my buddypress website was able to send private message to users not his friend, is that the way buddypress works. what can i do to stop this. i want users to be able to send messages to users who they have accepted friendship with.
i will appreciate any advise.

I was looking for a solution to this a while back, Shane provided one here:

https://buddypress.org/support/topic/private-message-friends-only/

the code goes into the bp-custom.php file.

Without it private messages can be sent to anyone, friend or not.

Thanks @mcUK , i just went through the article. before i try it, am just wondering if that settled it finally in your own case without giving error messages.

Not tested thoroughly as I was sidetracked, but it seems to work fine.

You can try BuddyPress Private Messages for Friends Only
Note:This plugin hasn’t been updated in over 5 years
