username coopted from email address

Somehow on my site my username took on a derivative of my e-mail address and it is now publicly showing on my profile page over my header picture. I can’t figure out how this happened or how to change it. I installed the Username plugin to change my username, but it hasn’t changed on my profile. Is there anything else I should be looking at?
