Using groups as category taxonomy

I am looking for insight on using groups as taxonomies.
My current project will use groups extensively. I am looking to enable group admins to freely associate groups with one another by making groups a taxonomy within groups. I recon this is a pretty complex proposition.
The CPT-onomies plugin does something similar to what I am looking for, but with custom post types, which BP groups are not. Some BP devs are currently busy working on Group Types. Could these tools possibly be used together to achieve what I am looking for?
