What code can be used to send mail within buddypress

I need to perform 2 actions
1. I would be tweaking the event manager plugin to show invitation where an Event Host can send Private invitation to other members. Can anyone tell me how to send a message in buddypress, I need mail() in php equivalent in Buddypress(messaging system of buddypress)
2. Admin able to send Buddypress email message to all members
Is there any function that can send a mail within resulting a notification to user the primary email id id(xxxx @yahoo.com)
