What function and what file is responsible for recognizing links in DB???

If I put a link when posting something on my profile or in the group, it is displayed as a link. In the DB it is saved as string no “a” or href or other tag. So it seems that some how it is recognized and rendered as link with “a” tag. I’m asking cause I need to display the link as image (if one) or embed video (if youtube or vimeo) or display it just as link if none of the above. If you can tell me with function/s is responsible for that and where it is located. I’m using BP 1.5.6 and WP 3.4.1 on Apache.
