That directory doesn’t exist normally, it was discussed as a better solution to the usual plugins/buddypress/languages location due to overwriting
I think that page has been recently edited and I will track down the culprit and ask they edit and make things clearer, I wrote the Poedit section and at the time there was iirc clearer steps on file location alternatives.
For the moment try following the steps outlined saving the file in buddypress folder and editing your necessary files – the example code snippet that sets your language file to use – until clarification can be sought on new steps.
Thanks, hnla! I will wait the new solution then. No hurry.
Recommended location in BP 1.3 will be wp-content/languages/
I am the “culprit”; I edited the codex page as it was a little too confusing in my eyes.
I also wanted to remove the step to create a bp-custom.php file, as it is unnecessary in BP 1.2.7 and up.
I’ve just taken some time to update the codex page once more:
https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/
And am using @modemlooper ‘s screenshot from:

Feel free to edit!
yeah I checked the revision history
Thanks for totally rewriting my poedit section, clearly modemlooper was right it was too detailed and confusing, shame had thought it was helping
Don’t get me wrong, hnla!
Really appreciate the leg work!
there’s no emoticon for tongue in cheek!
Although I do draw issue on dumbing stuff down too far – as I expressed on modemloopers post – I’m afraid it’s up to users to step up to the plate and put a little effort in after all it’s how we all learnt and still do have to learn each and every day (this is in no reference to anyone)
The one thing I was trying to get clarification on Paul…! was how BP was aware that /languages/ folder existed if it was not necessary to add a ‘define()’ to bp-custom- and thought that ought to be mentioned briefly?
Really appreciate the leg work! damned with feint praise
@imjscn So to round of the thread Jenny (just in case you were still wondering) you simply need to create the directory ‘languages’ in wp-content WordPress looks for this and defines it if not set otherwise, Buddypress now mirrors that process and also will check for the languages folder in wp-content but you must be running 1.2.7 for this change.
Great! Thanks for all the dedicate jobs in the mushroom kingdom!
