WordPress 3 first, buddypress later & buddypress only on main site.

  • Hi,

I’m planning to create a site for local businesses to create sites for themselves and later integrate social networking through buddypress. Here’s what I’d like to do, and I’m hoping someone can tell me if this will work:

    1) First install only wordpress 3.0 multi-site using the subdomain option and start getting a limited number of users on

    2) Once buddypress is WP 3 compatible install it

    3) Have buddypress only on the main site, so the subdomains don’t have buddypress information

Will this path work so that the pre-buddypress accounts will have access to buddypress features?

Is it possible to have buddypress features only on the main site, but still allow subdomain owners access to buddypress?

    Thanks!

*edit* Actually, an even better solution might be to have buddypress enabled only on a single subdomain, Something like http://www.connect.url.com. Would this be possible While still allowing a single sign up for the personal blog and the buddypress install?

Sounds like a plan.. It’s a matter of weeks until WP 3.0 is out, and BuddyPress will be compatible from day 1, so you might want to launch the site when WP 3.0 is out with BuddyPress from the start! Good luck!

to answer both of your final questions: Yes and Yes!

So are you saying I’d be better off waiting for both to be out, or could I just do the wordpress 3 beta now, and wait on buddypress compatibility?

You can always install bp later when you have your site up and running, so you can do both. But imo its better to use buddypress from the start because it soul purpose is to built a community with and its a great way to let your members and blog owners interact.. So I include it from the start :-)
