My suggestions… optimize your tables in the database to help with wp_usermeta issues, Install W3 Cach plugin and use Database Caching, and make sure your site is sending out GZipped data…

Optimized table helped a little.
W3-Total Cache was installed weeks ago but the site is on RackSpaceCloud and they suggest not using database caching. Will enable though to see what happens. GZip compression is enabled but I’ve never verified.
Update: Turns out database caching was enabled on W3. Once disabled then the results are far better:
