I need to be able to modify the content returned from the function “the_content” in single.php.

The reason I need to is to extract images, which I will place elsewhere in the page, and add some divs and other html elements into the content for styling reasons.

I am new to WordPress and found a page about the Shortcode API, but it seems like shortcode is functionality for the blog owner to use when writing posts. I need to be able to modify the content outputted in the Loop.
