creating a new template for search

I am trying to create a new search template (and thereby customising the results – i need two customised search/results pages) by duplicating the index.php file in the members folder. I recreated it as a template and assigned it to my page in WP, all good so far – but when I use the search form on it, it returns a 404 within the loop div. It seems not to be accessing members-loop.php

I am not great with php so I am wondering if I am missing something really obvious? Any help would be appreciated!

@mercime thank you for those links. I had looked at them before but not indepth. I muddled through and put together a sort of template but need to keep tweaking
