Design Goals for BuddyPress

    @wickedbob

    I’m confused.

    At http://buddypress.org/about/, it is stated:

“Groups in BuddyPress are a gathering of members, blog posts, photos and any other user generated content.”

This is not currently what I have in my BuddyPress installation or many others that I have found online. There does not appear to be any way for members of groups to share their blog posts or any other user generated content. Yes I know photo galleries are coming.

Initially I was excited about moving my online community to BuddyPress because of the social networking aspects. But now that I have it installed, I have a social network which can only share forum posts and threads of consciousness called wires.

This seems very limited to me.

Am I missing something essential here?

What are the design goals behind BuddyPress?

  • I should change this, right now this is not in the groups functionality, but it will be in upcoming versions.

Also, remember that like WPMU, BuddyPress functionality can be extended with plugins. There are a number of developers working tirelessly at doing just that.

With regards to the Groups feature, Nicola Greco has created a plugin that helps to extend BP Groups.

    Cool. I thought I wasn’t going mad.

I’ll stop bothering you Andy so you can make more cool stuff. :P

Jeff, I tried installing Nicola’s plugins on a clean BP installation but some of them seem to break my plugins page and then make the database dirty, so I’m unable to reinstall them again without plugins functionality breaking again.

I’m gonna wait until his work is a little bit more stable.

I would contact Nicola via his bp-dev.org site and discuss this issue with him. I know that he has recently upgraded many of his plugins. Your feedback will help him make his plugins even better!

    Thanks Jeff.

I did send him a message through this site but didn’t think to do it through his own.

Yes… I’ve posted this elsewhere (so please excuse me if I sound like a broken record) but it would be great if groups could share different kinds of content… photos (coming this fall?) videos, files and wiki’s (aka group-editable page/post).

Maybe once we are able to share blog posts in groups (as Andy mentions above)… wiki functionality could be wedged into groups simply by installing WordPress Wiki. Create a blog post, make it wiki-enabled and then share it with the group? Just a thought. Not sure if that would work or not.
