Elegant Themes (Evolution) tweaks

I followed the instructions in an earlier thread to make the Evolution Theme by Elegant Themes compatible with BuddyPress.

In the default install the sidebar ends up in the footer and the user’s avatar is tight up against the main menu.

After adding code to header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php, the sidebar is ok but there’s a bit too much space above the avatar and main menu bar.

How can I reduce this space?

Second question: It’s unclear from the previous instructions whether sidebar.php and header.php should be in the child theme folder with the other two files. What’s the best practice?

3rd question: The instructions in the earlier thread required some additional code to be added at the bottom of sidebar-buddypress.php. If I copy and paste the code the script appears in the page.

    What am I doing wrong?

What is the purpose of this code?

    Many thanks
