Embedding images via url/link

Is it possible to oembed an image with just its link via the activity feed? I feel like this used to be possible.. am I taking crazy pills?

Example pasting, http://blog.usapears.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/pear-painting.jpg
in the What’s new? box would embed the image.

well i think it’s only for sites on the whitelist:

Is it possible to add as many whitelisted sites as you want?

How would I go about adding that site for example?

i don’t think you’re following here the urls that automatically embed content can only be from that list of pre approved sites you should read the whole page it clarifies how the whole thing works. Glad to be a help!

edit: i guess you can add to the whitelist but i believe it above my skill level explanation for that is towards the bottom of that page.
