More than just an option to add someone as a friend?

    Hi there everyone,

    In a future release of BuddyPress (or maybe as a plugin), could there be more than just adding someone as a “friend”? I feel that “friend” is not right, when people add each other cause they are contacts, co-workers, family, etc. An option to set up a more specific relationship would be appreciated.

    Add as Co-Worker? Add as Family?

    Ideally:

    1. Contact
    2. Friend
    3. Family
    4. Co-worker

    But maybe it could be flexible so that people could adjust it according to their needs? Not everyone is going to need every option I would think.

    interesting thought maybe a good feature enhancement for trac if it doesn’t already exist.

    well friending is a very Facebook-y idea if you ask me. Having multiple groups of connections or at least the option of doing that seems to be worthy of a core feature to me but then i don’t make any decisions like that so i guess its matter of opinion.

    Twitter uses followers, LinkedIn uses contacts, Facebook and Google+ use friends (but Google+ at least allows you to define what level of friendship it is via circles).

    Adding more than one option than just “friend” makes sense to me, it’s why I suggested it.

    i would also add that most contact managers/lists also provide for different categories of contacts. in my mind it’s not even necessarily levels but classifications. Simply being able to redefine the term friend without manhandling the core files the way its possible to do with the base profile field group also falls under the umbrella of this extended functionality, again in my opinion.
