sent messages time zone

It is set correctly on the wordpress admin side but buddypress displays a different time. What does buddypress use for time zone on sent messages?
example:
time set in worpress admin = 10:43 AM
in buddypress sent message box = 7:43 am
in buddypress = Message sent successfully! Sent 8 hours ago (!!??!!??)
[wordpress 2.9.1 + buddypress2.1-rc]

I am experiencing a similar issue, and all of my correct time settings are in sync.
