Buddypress’s should work like facebooks but doesn’t so why is that such a hard feature to get? You finally got profile privacy right, so why not activity privacy?

I am not being negative, it is just a question so please don’t feel like I am attacking anyone on this issue.

well technically that’s an opinion albeit a valid one. I think for small communities privacy can sorta be a bad thing but once the community reaches a certain size i would agree it would almost be a necessity. Perhaps you should suggest a toggle option of some kind as a feature request for a future release?

Although I certainly respect your opinion on the matter, I’m just not exactly sure what the size of a community (after all, every community always starts out with just one individual) has to do with anything at all here concerning basic privacy options, @ubernaut, but, @bphelp, you can certainly implement activity stream privacy for “friends only” and such, there just isn’t any elegant or up-to-date plugin that is current with BuddyPress 1.6/1.7 which works right out of the box, not that I know of anyhow, so you’ll either just have to code it and customize it in yourself or hire someone to do it for you.

The biggest problem with these types of out-of-core solutions (plugins, custom code, etc.) is that they, generally, have to continually evolve with the core updates for each release, and once you’ve built a community based on certain privacy options, ones that your members have come to expect and rely on, and they then all of a sudden break on you with a new update of core it then puts your entire community at risk, not to mention the immediate loss of respect and alienation of your site’s members, and that’s quite obviously not a good thing to have happen.

Don’t worry too much about being “negative” or “attacking” anyone here with such a valid question either. I’ve been working with and using BuddyPress since it first came out under Andy Peatling about 4-years ago, and full core privacy options should have definitely been one of the very first items to go in, and right from the start too. No doubt about it. Why haven’t they been implemented yet, especially after all of these years? I haven’t a clue.

I am betting though that core privacy options for activity, perhaps even full core privacy, will eventually make it into the core code and end everyone’s misery surrounding this entirely worn-out subject, but, again, when that is we just don’t know, but I’m guessing that with the new theme compatibility in BuddyPress 1.7 it is sure to light a bigger fire under it due to more mass adoption, as well as with the unending beat of the privacy advocate drum here.

@inkblots Thank you for your input. I guess I just feel that when the profile fields privacy options was introduced in BP 1.6 it seems like it would have made sense to have activity stream privacy as well. Whether its used or not it would make more sense because if you don’t want non friends seeing your profile then you probably don’t want them seeing your posts in the activity stream either. I wish the activity stream would have another scope so you could see your friends and your own activities in the stream only. Never the less I am grateful for the hard all the hard work the core team has done thus far. I guess we always don’t get everything we want in life though but thanks again!

It is safe to say this issue should be officially closed thanks to the work of @megainfo with the buddypress activity privacy plugin which totally caught me by surprise and throughout my tests I have found it works flawlessly. Here is the link to this awesome plugin:

    + 1

Ditto – same experience as bp-help

There is now a reasonable body of tools to allow truly excellent (possibly superior to any other networking platform) “privacy/moderation”

This plugin is one such tool

    and then there is

http://www.philopress.com/products/buddyblock/ (premium – but great! -gives your members the power to decide who can see and interact with them)

    and also possibly

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-moderation/ (though you do need to consult the WordPress Forum to add up-to-date tweaks to get it working properly!)

@megainfo was this not perhaps something you could have contributed / returned a patch to core to bolster the work Boone put in for the profile aspect.

It be lovely to see a larger section of the BP coding community helping on trac tickets and the core developers.

Regardless though it’s a useful addition to BP, well done.

@megainfo, you are the bomb. Thanks for this great plugin. I voted 5 star already.

Future suggestion,To make it look cleaner, may be just a padlock icon with a dropdown arrow to replace the word privacy: . So when you click on the padlock it then display all the privacy level.

@megainfo: I hope the forthcoming admin controls will allow setting privacy levels for different roles. For example, I’d really like to be able to force subscribers to only be able to post to their friends, where as I’d like my contributors/authors to be able to post public updates. This would essentially make the activity stream work like Facebook for subscribers, but still give higher level users the ability to do public posts.
