Invite anyone displaying friends in directory?

I am very new to wordpress and buddypress and I installed this mod and I have the following question
When you create a group and get to the Send Invites part (4) the box under “Select members from the directory: ” is empty even though I have many friends – is this correct ?
If not shouldn’t it display my friends and if so how do I fix this?
