Memory woes with buddypress

    I’ve been trying to get buddypress on our site at http://ctrlcmdesc.com but the server keeps running out of memory and crashing.

    I’m using the following plugins of note:

    jetpack
    w3tc (mostly using opcode, but tried just using disk mode)
    cubepoints (+ buddypress integration)

    With everything except buddypress on, there’s typically 200 MB or so available RAM (out of 496). If I enable buddypress, before long all the available RAM is used up, and then the system starts swapping, until all 256 MB of swap is used up, and the server hangs, usually within an hour or so.

    I’ve got the php.ini settings set to 64 MB limit, any lower and the pages won’t load.

    At this point I have no idea what to try to improve the situation. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    might be helpful if you provided a little more info but I’m guessing from what you’ve already said that this is a shared host i would not personally recommend buddypress on any shared server. Not that there aren’t a lot of people around here who are way more knowledgable then me around here who could very well optimize a site to run efficiently without a ton of resources but a certain level of activity no amount of optimization would work very well with a shared host, again my opinion.

    No it’s a linode system. However, I did follow the steps outlined here to reduce the Mysql cache, which seems to have helped immensely.

    This is very much a server configuration question, and there’s probably not many people on this forum that know enough to offer meaningful advice (I certainly don’t). If you’re on a Linode 512, there just mightn’t be enough power on your server, especially if you are running other services, too (e.g. MySQL).
