BP 1.7.1 and "The forums component has not been set up yet" error

My install of BP 1.7.1 on WP 3.5.1 has suddenly started throwing up the “forums component has not been set up yet” error, as well as “Call to undefined function bb_get_id_from_slug() in bp-forums-functions.php” on all existing forum posts.

I’ve searched and tried some of the old fixes, but am a bit stumped as, with BP 1.7, when you turn off “group forums (legacy)” in the BP settings it vanishes, never to return, so I can’t turn it back on again.

I’ve tried restoring the database from a backup which was made before the error started (I know it’s before the corruption, as there are a few posts missing which were created after it, so the corruption should not be in that backup) but the error still persists.

HELP… !

@petervandoorn did you upgrade from older BP version? What theme are you using?

Sorry, should have said first time round – I’m using a self-developed child of Buddypress Default theme. I only made a child theme because I needed some custom page templates for some non-BP related stuff. Everything BP-related is handled by BP Default.

I have tried it with the BP Default theme, and I have turned off all other plugins. I have even reinstalled the BP plugin.

I have now found the thing to turn the group forums (legacy) back on, but it makes no difference.

Thanks. Any thoughts or insights would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the bug report, Peter.

I have confirmed your issue and have added a ticket here:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4999

The ticket has a patch that will add back the “Forums” tab so you can configure the old legacy forums.

Moving forward, the legacy forums will not be the preferred option and you should look to use the bbPress plugin.
