Save search / Auto filter members with cookie data

I’m working auto-filtering the members page based on a logged-in user’s xprofile information. I’ve figured out how to obtain the necessary information from xprofile and I’m going to confirm whether the user would find this filtering convenient before saving the preference in a cookie.
How can I use the cookie data to modify the set of returned members? I’ve thought through refreshing the /members page with the proper parameters if not already present, but this doesn’t seem like the most elegant solution. Perhaps ajax_querystring or some other serverside filtering based on the cookie data?
