Bum Install?

  • Hi folks,
Last night I installed wordpress and then buddy press. I have a number of problems right off the bat……
Firstly I can log in with the admin account I setup at install but if I try to create a new user there are problems. No email verifation is sent. The new user can’t access profile etc (there’s no ‘Howdy ******’in the top right) and no admin bar there either as in admin account, there’s no login/sign up screen when you first access the site and once logged in there’s a login/sign up widget remaining on the right sidebar. In admin panel/users the new user was created.

Secondly I installed a gallery plugin but where’s the link to the users galley etc. ‘Admin’ seems to have some funtionality but not a new user. Then again even as admin I cant see a ‘galley’ link. How do I fix that?

I’m setting this up as a way of kids, who live, sail or travel in odd places around the world, to hook up. I’d like to have a ‘blog’. ‘Gallery’, ‘Profile’ etc link on the menu bar to keep things simple (the edit profile seems a bit fussy too for most kids), is that possible and if so how do I go about it?

Regarding the first issue, have I got a bum install here, should I reinstall or can I fix it somehow.

Sorry if I sound garbled I’ve got 4 screeming kids around and it’s hard to think!

    My url: http://www.cruisingkidsonline.com/soc/
    admin panel: http://www.cruisingkidsonline.com/soc/wp-admin/
    Pass: admin, admin

    Test user: joblogs pass: user
Am I barking up the wrong tree using wordpress/buddypress for a kids site?

    Cheers,

    Jon

#1. I see that you’ve installed WP 3.1 RC3. Unless you’re developing and/or interesting in debugging, you should install stable version of WP 3.0.4 which is what you’ll get in download here https://wordpress.org/download/. I recommend reinstall from scratch – clean database.

#2. Re Gallery plugin you installed – PhotoSmash Gallery plugin. I haven’t used the plugin and do not know whether it’s compatible with BuddyPress in terms of allowing users to upload media without going to the backend/dashboard i.e. uploading images in posts. There are free and paid Gallery plugins which are compatible with BuddyPress.
    BP Album +: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-album/
BuddyPress Media Component with KalturaCE Suppor: http://wpveda.com/buddypress-kaltura-media-component/
    BP Gallery (paid): http://buddydev.com/plugins/bp-gallery/

#3. How young are the kids you’re expecting to post in your site? In relation to that, won’t you need parental permission for kids to enter your site? Different laws for different states/countries.

#4. I suggest changing your admin username and password. Anyone can come in and mess around in your site – though I appreciate the pass since I saw right away what WP version you’re using and Gallery plugin you installed :-)

Thanks for the reply, Mercime. I ran an auto install from simplescripts, wierd that they should be offering a beta. I’ll uninstall and try again.

Hadn’t thought about the legal side of things, I’ll have to look into parental control before proceeding. Passwords were so that you guys could take a look around :)

    Cheers,

    Jon

Try and avoid auto installs altogether, they tend to lead to tears, and long posts trying to track down issues that eventually transpire to have little to do with the apps in question.

WP and BP are best installed manually – not hugely difficult or time consuming.
