Two WP3 installs, one with buddypress

    I’m sure this has been covered but my relatively weak Google-fu (and search-fu as it applies to this forum) has come up with very little that can help me with this.

    I currently have one WP3 install, multi-site, subdomain, that just hosts sites with content on them. No community stuff. Subdomain install. Let’s say it’s http://www.mysite.com.

    I want to have BuddyPress installed in order to give users blogs and have a community, but I am paranoid about them being able to use the plugins I have installed (since the plugin limitation plugins I’ve found do not properly work on the latest WP version) AND from what I understand, I can’t have BuddyPress give users a subdirectory blog on a subdomain install.

    tl;dr: Here’s what I want to do:

    – have one WP install with just content. Subdomain install.
    — http://www.mysite.com, blah.mysite.com, blahblah.mysite.com etc.
    — In a perfect world, be able to embed BuddyPress stuff into this site, too.
    – have a WP install just for a community OR a BuddyPress install that would let users use subdirectories. (Possibly-undesirable plugins isolated, if that’s the case.) Subdirectory install.
    — community.mysite.com/userblog1 etc.
    — Probably integrate with Simple:Press too, but that’s outside the scope of what I need help with and I can deal with that myself

    I already know that there’s a way to share user tables by way of wp-config. What the big deal is now is if this is possible to properly execute. With that in mind, has anyone tried this or know how to pull it off?

    Thanks in advance, and please forgive me if it turns out this was the easiest thing to find in the history of ever.

    The subdomains & subfolder parts are controlled by multisite, not buddypress. And you can’t mix ’em. Not even with multiple networks (unless you want to map those subdomains, but I’m guessing you do not).

    SO ya can’t find it cuz it’s not really easily do-able. Not without two installs.

    Why not just have it all in one site? Why can’t the users have theirsite.yourdomain.com? They’ll still show up in the BP stuff.

    Sure you can. As Andrea_r mentioned above, “Why not just have it all in one site?” That way, you won’t have to make changes in DB to have the same userbase for both WPMS installs. You can have BP in your main site, and just use BP Template Pack plugin and go through the BP compatibility process to make your WP theme compatible with BP in main site.

    The main reason I want two separate installs is because I can’t get wildcard subdomains working on the web server level. I have to add each subdomain in cPanel.

    Which would be really, really bad for users who want their own blogs.

    Would it be possible, then, to convert my subdomain install into a subdirectory install and still have BuddyPress work happily? (I know it’s compatible with both, but any difficulties that could arise with a switched install versus a clean subdomain one..?) And would the Domain Mapping plugin work fine as a hack-around to get some sites as subdomains?

Yet in your first post you said “I currently have one WP3 install, multi-site, subdomain, that just hosts sites with content on them.” which means regularly that wildcard subdomains are enabled. So which one is it? Or are you talking about installations in different servers?

    And if you really don;t have wildcards.. move to a new host that does. Seriously. There’s less work & pain in moving to a new host than there would be to have any kind of workaround.

    I only have three sites on the current WP install, all with subdomains, all added by hand in cPanel. I don’t plan to add any more in the near future, and if I do then it’ll only be one or two and I can deal with it.

    Wildcard subdomains are enabled on the DNS level — which seems to be a bit useless, come to think of it, though easier then going to my registrar and adding the DNS entries each time — but not with Apache/cPanel. Going to sdkfsdkfkdsfksdd.mysite.com just takes me to the Default Website Page thing.

    All right. I’ll bug my host a bit to see if there’s anything else that can be done, then.
