How should I install Buddypress on my WordPress-plus-BBPress site?

I currently have a WordPress (3.2.1) site integrated with a BBPress (1.0.3) forum.

I would like to end up with a WordPress plus Buddypress installation while retaining all the posts from my forum.

What’s the best way of going about doing it? Should I:

1. Install Buddypress on my current site and choose the “use my BBPress installation” option for the forum?
2. Upgrade my current BBPress installation to the newly-released BBPress 2 first?
3. Do it some other way I haven’t thought of?

The reason I ask first instead of getting my hands dirty and doing some testing is the database the site runs on is pushing 1Gb and I haven’t had any success creating a duplicate site for testing on.
