Can’t See How to Connect with Other Users

  • Hi – I’m just getting started with BuddyPress, and so I’m testing things out. When I set up some users, I can’t see how they are supposed to connect with each other — friend someone, send messages, see each other’s profiles, etc.

When I have a TestUser make a post on the site, for example, all the links associated with that member go to his blog posts, not his BuddyPress info. So it seems there’s no way to for member to interact.

I know this obviously isn’t right, but I have no idea why it’s doing this or how to fix it.

    Thanks for any help.

  • Hi

Are you using the demo theme that comes with BuddyPress, or your own theme? If it’s not BP-Default, you can check out and play with a test site at http://testbp.org

Hi Paul – I’m using my own theme (and will need to use it for the live site). I’ve run the Buddypress plugin pack, and everything seemed to go OK with that.

I’ve played around a little bit on testbp.org, and so I have an idea about how things are supposed to work, but it’s not working that way for me.

One other thing – when someone writes a post, I would like other users to be able to have a choice: to see more of their posts (as wp normally does) or to go to their BP profile page to message them, see their activity, etc.

Any other ideas about this? Thanks.

When you say “make a post on the site” are you talking about a Blog post in a WordPress Multisite install, or an Activity Stream update? A blog post from a user will create a hyperlink on the Activity Stream that will go directly to that blog, but very much like on this site, if you click directly on the avatar of the user in question, you should be taken to their profile page, on which you will see a “Friend” button, a “Private Message” button etc.

Ensure that you have activated all of these items in the Network Admin/Buddypress Panel. It is possible that you have friend connections; private messages; profiles; etc turned off. Here’s a nice tutorial on setting up Buddypress 1.5 http://wpmu.org/the-illustrated-guide-to-installing-and-setting-up-buddypress-1-5/comment-page-1/
