Set image size for activity stream

Hi,
On my site (www.tipua.com) we have a sitewide activity stream on the home page set to 643px wide, a member activity stream viewed on member profiles set to 916px wide, and a single activity page where the image width is set to 1112px. rtMedia is used to manage images.
To minimise page load times but retain best possible image quality (it’s a site for photographers/artists), I’d like to set the medium image to 643px on upload, and the Large image to 1112px on upload (easily done, and I’ve tried all sorts of combinations in case there’s some sort of auto selection based on container and image width), and to select the medium image for the sitewide activity stream and the large image for the member activity stream.
I’ve spent untold hours searching for an answer with no result, which leads me to think I’m missing something blindingly obvious 🙂
If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
