New to BuddyPress
-
I have WordPress (not MU) installed on a site. It was installed with Fantastico. Is that a problem for BuddyPress? If I need to uninstall it, how do I do that? Do I have to use WPMU to use BuddyPress?

Is there any good documentation that walks one through setting up and using BuddyPress?

@clamoreaux There have been issues using a webhost script with BuddyPress https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/#system-and-server-requirements

No. You can install BuddyPress on single WP installation since BP 1.2

The BuddyPress Codex is your friend

For example, I want the Name field hidden and the user known on the site by their username only. Right now it is showing as seen by Anyone. I can’t have that on the type of site I am building.
And can fields be searched on?
Hi, Regarding running BP on a WP site installed via Fantastico… Can you elaborate on what the ‘numerous issues” might be? I am experiencing an ‘access permission’ error and am wondering if this is the cause. Before I perform major reconstructive surgery on my WP install, I’d like to identify the source of this error.
@artshop there are a variety of reasons for permissions errors in WordPress and/or BuddyPress. Could be or not be related to fantastico, depends on When/Where are you experiencing such warnings/error and what’s in your error logs if any.
As for installing WP with fantastico, that might be fine for a simple default blog. But for WP installs where you intend to install BuddyPress and/or go multisite, then you’d be better off installing it manually which may take you a few minutes longer to install … but the trade-off is not going through hours/days of trouble-shooting later. In addition, unless fantastico or any other webhosting one-click WP install scripts have changed in using the same prefix (wp_ or wpdb2_ etc) for all the one-click tricks, your installation is not secure i.e., hackable. There are other reasons for not using one-click webhost scripts for production sites which you can search via google. Lastly, it is also a requirement for installing BuddyPress https://codex.buddypress.org/user/before-installing/#system-and-server-requirements
Thanks. SimpleScripts; not Fantastico. (We are doing the manual install today) However, this may not resolve the User/Permissions issue. We are running MembersS2. Our site has 50 members who are assigned Roles through S2.
Problem: Installed BP. All A-OK. Then, when the Users login, they are unable to access the WP Admin. (“insufficient permissipns”) This even happened to one of our Site Administrators!
Any ideas?
… Interesting, too, that once they login, they show up on the BP Members page. But, the current site Users are not automatically inducted into the BP Members page. (Is that normal?)As was mentioned above, errors can be due to a variety of issues. It can also be caused by error/s in configuring membership plugins as well. Check that your settings with s2member forum/tech support.
Users who registered before BuddyPress was activated have not been “recorded” by BuddyPress. They need to log in first after BP is activated to be included in member count. So that’s normal.
