Users Personalised Welcome Screen, widgets etc

    Hey,

I’m not sure if this has been discussed or not, but I would love for a user to be able to visit something like; example.com/home/ or even the normal homepage and a Facebook style homepage appear.

It would ideally feature a sort of amalgamation of all my friends activity streams into one, and things like that. Almost like a portal type of page personalized to that specific user.

    Any thoughts?

I realise this can probably be done in a theme, editing the sites home.php template file and checking for the current user etc; but what built-in functions exist for a ‘my friends activity’ stream.

I think this could be a great core addition, especially if we allowed the use of widgets etc so they user could *choose* what appeared on their own customized welcome screen.

    Cheers,

    Alex

    http://yourdomain.tld/members/you/activity/my-friends

Where yourdomain.tld is of course your domain, and you is of course you. That will get you to your friends’ activity.

I like your idea about wigetizing the profile/home page, but I think that’s probably a ways away yet. It would involve splitting the member theme up into two specific themes; a public theme, and a back-end theme. One for yourself, and one for others basically. Most of the code could be snipped from the existing blog wigets, but it would mean that all of the current member areas would need to be turned into widgets themselves, which would be no small undertaking.

With al little hack – somewhere discussed here in the forum – you can get friends-activity to the homepage.

http://berra.graphic-studio.ch is our testsite and a small thing we did: if you are logged out, you’ll get the welcome and login screen. When you are logged in (you don’t see this) your friends activity appear.

If there would be more possible it would be surely great! :-)

I’m building a facebook theme for Buddypress, and this is one of the things I’m trying to integrate into it. I don’t believe it would need a seperate front-end theme, just the same peice of code that appears in the friend activity feed provided in the original install.

Regarding widgetising the profile page, I think checkboxes to choose what you do/don’t want would suffice – I’m not really talking about fully fledged WP widgets managed from the backend.

And getting friends’ activity onto a widget obviously shouldn’t be too hard by the sounds of it!
