Large avatar images hanging around in blogs.dir

    [I’m still on BP 1.0.3]

I noticed that my WPMU/BuddyPress installation was starting to grow rapidly and pretty quickly tracked down the source: avatar images. It seems that there are some very large (1MB+) images in the avatar folders below blogs.dir. In most of the folders there are just two small images (the avatars at two different sizes), but in some cases there are other large images.

Some experimentation confirmed that this can happen when people download an image for their avatar, but don’t complete the process for changing the avatar image.

Is there anything built into BP to clean this up, or does one have to go in there periodically and do it manually?

I suppose a cron job to delete the large files would work too.

    Anyone else dealing with this?

    Thanks.

Anyone else having this issue? Thoughts on how to deal with it?

I have a directory in an old install under avatars that is number “0” that has 2 large files in it; other than that, everything seems on the up and up.

Can you confirm the steps to duplicate the issue every time? If so, PM them to me so I can test, confirm, and patch it right away.

Thanks JJJ. Here are the steps:

    1. Log in as a member

    2. Go to the “change your avatar” option

    3. Browse to a new avatar photo, say new.jpg

    4. Press “upload”, which will take you to a page where you can crop your avatar

    5. Drop out and go to some other page without completing the process

If you then look in blogs.dir in the member’s folder you will see “new.jpg”. The process never completed, so this image wasn’t deleted.
