Activity Commenting

BuddyPress 1.2 will see the merging of status updates, the wire and activity streams into something a bit more “live”. You’ll also be able to comment on activity entries (with threading).

I’ve just completed the first step of the merge and updated the default themes. You can check it out on http://testbp.org/.

Part of the change will mean that the activity feed will be the first thing you see when you look at a user’s profile. This will be possible to change back.

Still some things to do, activity item permalinks, comment delete support (edit: done), and styling of comments in the personal stream.

thanks for the info, because i simply deactivated all these features on my first BP site, as they make the site filled with too much stuff…

though i’d like to have 1.2 in hands today… rofl

Now that is something Andy! Although kind of hard to keep up with all my theme customizations. What’s going to change there?

Great improvement to bp! I also like how groups and friends displayed on sidebar when viewing user profiles. Now that I won’t have to edit themes to accomplish this after 1.2. :)

    I am excited !

This really brings a lot more interaction !

The “Group Activity” is perfect. Great job !

It is absolutely great, amazing and what it should be! I am thrilled and it’s another HUGE step forward. By the way: I think it is also much, MUCH easier for the end-user – just ONE place. Genius! Thanks Andy!!!

(ps:really, go and test it on http://testbp.org/)

Now that I tested it a little some thoughts (constructive I hope):

    1. In the sitewide activity it doesn’t show a comment, when it’s belonging to an older entry… I think it would be cool, if it would show up on top, no matter how old the original entry was, because with the comment, it’s getting “New” again (hope you are getting what I mean with my english…)

    2. In the test-group: http://testbp.org/groups/buddypress-testers-614548248 there are interesting discussions. One is about “feeding back” the comments to the original source (Blog-Post, etc) and one about the topic if the forums still make sense with that kind of activity-stream. Check it out and get involved in the discussion here – I think those are very important topics!

My answer is: As simple as possible for the end-user. Merge as much as you can!

An idea I posted in the group about the forum etc would be: Finding the topic and tagging would be the only benefit for forums. What if forums are topically organized with the overview and everything, but the answers would be the comments in the activity stream…?!

I guess technically (in the background) it would “measure” if it is a forum-post, blog-post or just a status-message your commenting to in the activity and handle all of it differently… (maybe that is very complicated, but would be great!)”

    3. It really would be a loss, if there isn’t an option in the group anymore, to send a message to all members of the group… Right now I don’t see it anymore…

    4. Another thing: As the group-thing now I don’t have a possibility to write to a user on his wire (publicly) anymore and no message is sent to him/her… What about a twitter-like function that with a @username the person gets an email and my message occurs in his/her activity… Just dreaming, but woulöd be GREAT :-)

I’d also like to see merging. If not, there will be comments to forumposts that are lost in the clutter of comments everywhere.

I guess I understand now what you are saying (@Michael, @Tore):

    – when I make my comment to a Forum-Post, then my comment is showing-up at the “Home-page” and also within “My Activities”, but my comment is currently NOT showing-up within the specific Topic at the Group-Forum.

I do agree: All comments being made to a Forum-Topic, should be also made visible within this Group-Forum.

    Also, I would suggest a re-design of the “Forums”-page:

    https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1389

    https://trac.buddypress.org/attachment/ticket/1389/sketch_2.gif

this would make the “Forums”-page much more interesting for users and an easy understanding of how the “Group-Forums” are working.

    see a similar example here:

I really like feeding back comments from the stream into the source.. that would be a really good addition to the already greatly improved activity stream!

I just tried signing up on testbp.org and everything went fine until it sent me the email. I click the link to activate and it brings up a blank screen. Then trying to log in it basically says I do not exist?

The blank activation page problem should now be fixed.

I put in a feature request ticket for this a while back.

A big hope becomes true! Activity and status updates is turned of at my installation. People just didn’t like it.

I think this will change now quickly!

Thanks a lot for this improvement.

For the use case I have in mind, I am very interested in how blog posts appear in the activity stream.

At around 15:45 GMT, I made a test post on one of my testbp.org blogs:

    http://donnacha.testbp.org/2009/12/01/blog-post-activity-stream-test/

… but it did not appear in the activity stream on the testbp.org homepage, not even with the stream filtered to “Blog Activity Only”.

I noticed that the most recent blog post appearing in the stream was written 3 days, 19 hours ago – could it be that there is a substantial delay before blog posts appear in the stream?

I also noticed that the blog post has not appeared in my own profile page’s stream either.

It might be the case that, when I set up the blog, there might have been some option I took that renders all of that blog’s posts private, which might be preventing them from appearing in the streams, but I can’t remember doing so and, now, I cannot find any option to make all posts public.

I have been testing this and playing with it in the past few days. It seems pretty damn good, if you don’t mind me saying so :) We have quite a few possible uses in mind and will be releasing some (very simple) plugins to build on the functionality a little once this becomes a stable release.

    @Donnacha

I haven’t had any problems similar to those you have mentioned. Have you double-checked the wp_bp_activity_user_activity_cached table to make sure that the activities you are ‘missing’ are properly timestamped and “hide_sitewide” isn’t set to 1?

    Donnacha

    @donnacha

@aekeron – thanks for replying. The test posts I was referring to were actually made on TestBP.org, not my own installation, so, I cannot check the database. Does “hide_sitewide” relate to a setting I can control via my TestBP.org blog’s dashboard?

I like the new activity commenting; this is light years better than what we currently have.

I know you’re still working on this, Andy, but forum topics and activity threads are duplicated.

Forum topics / responses should not have activity commenting enabled. If a comment is made, perhaps add it as a forum reply instead?

Great work! I can’t wait for this to be released.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that blog activity comments should be actual blog comments as well… probably a little tricky here. A possible workaround could be to add a “Community Reactions” block to the blog post in question where activity comments would be listed? Kind of like a trackback or something?
