appended number in username

Hiya all, not sure if this was asked before, cant find in any search.
I am seeing some users are getting username with appended numbers i.e. af3-2 instead of af3 in the member’s profile/wire messages. Of course, when clicking on the link, user cant get to their profile page.
I saw that these appended numbers are actually in the wp_users user_nicename table. Seems like bp is using usernice_name as the profile link instead of the username — how to fix this?
