Friend suggestion plugin/widget

Hi,
I am looking for (or planning to develop) a widget which suggests the logged in user a list of members with whom he/she can be friends.
The logic is simple – get the logged in users friends and for each friend found get their friends if not already friend with logged user. It can get into infinite loop so put a limit just like the “online members avatar”
2 questions
1. Is there already some code that does this ?
2. If not, what template functions should i be looking at to get this done in the most efficient way.
