It looks like this site has employed copies of the groups component in order to make a complete separation between plugin groups and theme groups.

I’d like to achieve something similar by making a separation between “official” and “unofficial” groups, each in their own directory. Can anybody point me in the right direction for making this work?

Hmm, not quite what I’m getting at mercime. The ability to review groups – or to add functionality of any kind to existing groups – is already covered.

What I need is the ability to duplicate group functionality in entirely separate components, each with their own directory. For example:

Three separate but functionally identical “group-like” modules …
root/organizatations
root/departments
root/groups

No, this site hasn’t duplicated the groups component. It’s basically a bunch of IFs in the template code, and one action early on in the load process. In theory duplicating a component should work but I’ve never tried it.
