I see on this site you can “add to recipe box” and it will be saved to your profile – http://thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen/recipes/desserts/lemon-pistachio-cake/
I want to do something similar – is that a buddy press feature or is it an outside plugin?

That site is using a custom plugin. That plugin may piggyback on BP favorites, but it’s hard to tell.
