I’m pretty new to all of this, and from the get go I have just been editing files straight from my buddypress install…is it too late to create a child theme? I want my theme to be able to update as buddypress updates in the future…My changes aren’t that extensive, just some CSS, plugin customization, and a few php tweeks here and there.

Not too late. Just download the BP plugin to your computer so you can get the default theme. Create your child theme and upload that and enable it. Then, upload the default BP theme back to its original location.

Warning: Backup first in case something goes wrong:-)
