I have a hunch that a substantial percentage of new users will initially be unsure, nervous or reluctant to get involved in groups.

Is there a way to automatically add a user to a particular group based upon a selection they make during their sign-up?

For instance, a user could select California as their home state and find themselves a member of the California group.

I think that automatically enrolling users in at least one group, that is in some way relevant to them, would be a good way to nudge them towards participating in groups generally. They can, of course, leave a group but the idea is that it gives them a good starting point.

I had the same question two months ago with an answer – sadly I didn’t quite get it. Maybe you do, and can explain it to me…

You should write a function that adds user to a group (using the bp-groups functions) and add it via add_action to the registration process

i don’t know if the ID of the user is in $bp->loggedin_user->id while the user has activated the new account
