I’ve looked everywhere trying to find a fix to this but it seems very difficult to restrict usernames from having spaces. This has created quite abit of problem on my site with people creating usernames like Aaa Bbb and not realizing their username gets changed to Aaa-Bbb. There was a plugin addressing this but it no longer works. ( http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/restrict-usernames/ ).

You could write a front-end jQuery script that forces the behavior you want.
