I have usernames with spaces and they don’t play well with buddypress, any fix?

    I have been researching this issue and can’t seem to find a solid answer or fix anywhere.

    I have a bunch of usernames that in my wordpress install (imported from another system) that have spaces in them. In buddypress I noticed an issue where I cannot PM them at all, I get an error.

    I am wondering if there is anyway to fix this, either by altering buddypress to allow the spaces in the usernames, or perhaps running a mysql query to remove the spaces and replace them with –

    I am a little weary about the sql as I have read about username changes via sql causing profiles to break.

    Any ideas? I have 8000+ members and while most do not have spaces, many of them do and it would be impossible to manually fix all of them even if I could.
