First of all, do not use ALL CAPS to post your issue in this forum, it’s not kosher.
Second, what do you mean you “cannot get the links to work”? You have to be more specific than that – like link redirects to home page or to blank page, etc.
Third, pretty permalinks are required in BuddyPress installations. mod_rewrite must be enabled in your server.
Deactivate BuddyPress and any BP plugins you have installed, change to WP default theme – twentyten – and resolve permalink issues at WordPress forums before activating BuddyPress again.

Sorry….habit ….I use capitals all the time.
I’ve just tried what you said to do….I deactivated all of the buddy press plugins, did the permalinks, re installed the buddy press but the same links won’t work.
The links I can’t get to work are on the top menu bar….its got ‘my account’ and none of the options on the menu work except the log out’ or the ‘notifications’ link on the ‘notifications’ menu.
I’ve just created the pages ‘register’ ‘activity’ ‘members’ ‘groups’ ‘forums’ and they show up on the lower menu bar and those links work and show what they are supposed to ……so for some reason the menu links on the top menu don’t update themselves
so my question is….where or how do i make those links work?

Are you using the default buddypress theme? If not, you need the bp template pack to put the bp template files in your theme. that’s why they won’t work.
I’ve got the same problem. having followed mecime’s links, I reinstalled WP to the root directory but no change.
On mouseover, the link shows itself to be eg http://localhost/activity/ and there is no such directory… Checking other BP sites shows the same link – but there it works…
Any smart people know what’s going on?

I had already used the template pack but it doesn’t sort the problem. The links on the top menu want to go to…..my site/wp/members/admin/groups (members, forums etc) the links on the bar further down want to go to mysite/wp/groups (members, forums etc) the pages I’ve created are mysite/wp/index.php/groups (members, forums etc) which do work and show what they are supposed to …….so how do I get the other links to go to the pages that work?
I’ve read various things of what to do which is all ok if you know for sure what its all on about…..and I’ve tried loads of different things but nothing seems to be working……I put the members, forums folders in the top folder but I need an a b c guide on how to do it as I’m shooting in the dark really. The members folder I’ve put in the top folder doesn’t have an admin bit inside it
I have been web building for 8 years but there’s still a lot I don’t know & this is getting into this area unless I have an A B C guide of what to do & I’m not the only person who’s had this problem as I’ve read loads of places about it but not seem a simplistic soloution……its a shame cos wordpress is a very easy program to use and that’s why I’m prefering it to a lot of the other programs….. but this buddypress is not

t will not make a directory on the server. They are *virtual* the same way pretty permalinks work.
@ppdesigns please give a link to your site. You don;t move the bp templates to the top level folder of your install. This is all *theme* based. Any templates files you move from the default BP theme go in the theme you want to use.
And yes, buddypress is what I would call intermediate usage.

Just a heads up in case it wasn’t realised, using caps on forums/lists ( or generally around the net ) is considered to be the equivelent of ‘SHOUTING’ hence you will find it upsetting people and being remarked on 
You will need to provide a link that resolves, please check that and repost.

Your link as posted above ‘ bournemouthmassage.com/wp ‘ did not resolve ( resolve, i.e the server could not be found – commonly due to no dns records existing for that domain name ) is that definitely the correct form of the domain name?

BP devs are going to improve support for Windows – IIS servers since adding that index.php for almost pretty permalinks does throw up errors
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2299 . In the meantime, if you’re working on Windows XP/7 etc, install XAMPP. Or, if you’re on webhost, move to a Linux/Unix server for a more relaxing experience.

I have the choice between windows or linux hosting platform so I usually choose linux which it is the platform on that site. Yes the pages I created that work have index.php in the address
I’m going to try a few more things and if I still can’t sort it….start a new topic

If you use Linux hosting, you won’t need to use index.php in the URL at all and that already solves possible major headaches in the long run

That doesn’t even work either, so it’s not just BP links that aren’t working, you’ve mucked up your permalinks somehow.
Thought so you’re on a Zeus server so I’m sorry to say you will have a struggle getting permalinks working correctly, this server is problematic in this regard, ideally a straightforward tried and tested LAMP stack works best and without any major issues is best. You may need to contact your tech support to try and resolve this or you can google to find a whole lot of posts about this issue and how to try and configure things but it requires some tech knowhow.
thankgod….i’m not being thick then…its my hosting!! This is the 2nd computer program I’ve had problems with because of this hosting and was thinking of moving anyway. I’m with hostgator also…..how do you guys rate hostgator? I know it will work on there as that’s where I had to move a site before because of a program not working.
trouble is ….I’ve got about 130ish web address’s & am not looking forward to moving them ALL!

Why are you putting index.php in the permalinks though? That will interfere. This link http://massagebournemouth.com/wp/index.php/wp/uncategorized/ still does not work. I got that from your nav menu.
And you do not need to create pages in the admin area. Delete them.
Hostgator is usually fine – just get a regular ol’ Linux package, nothing fancy. Many people are using BuddyPress on Hostgator.
What do you have on your permalink settings page?
Yes…lots of the links don’t work…that’s why I posted this…….I’m not putting index.php……..its happening automatically when I create a page and the ONLY pages that display properly are the ones I created.
Like hnla said…my hosting is no good so I’ll need to move the rest of my sites to hostgator that I want to use buddypress on them
