BuddyPress Plugin Activation Generates HTTP 500 Error

BuddyPress 1.27After installing BuddyPress on a working version of WordPress, activating the BuddyPress plugin corrupts the WordPress installation. After the activation has completed whatever is happening, the browser is redirected to: http://social.nanocrowd.com/wp-admin/plugins.php?activate=true&plugin_status=all&paged=1
And the following error text is presented:
Server error.The website encountered an error while retrieving http://social.nanocrowd.com/wp-admin/plugins.php?activate=true&plugin_status=all&paged=1. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

I’m using Rackspace cloud. This would be the first time a memory issue has surfaced using them.
It wouldn’t hurt to try and up the script mem limit – 64M or 96M are safer values. How did you install BP plugin, manually or through plugin page?
Looks like run out of memory during install which is why the tables look like they weren’t created.
thanks for the suggestions. it indeed was a memory limit problem with the PHP server. after modifying the .htaccess file to allow for a bit more memory, buddypress activated as desired.
however, it looks like any time i make a configuration change in the wordpress settings, my .htaccess file is wiped out and replaced with an empty version. i’ve changed the file permissions on the .htaccess file to “read only” but this doesn’t seem to be adequate.
any tricks?
it looks like going the opposite direction with the file permissions has applied the desired effect. that is, i changed the file permissions of the .htaccess file to read/write across the permission set – owner/group/public. this is unintuitive to me, but it’s hard to argue with the success.
…it does make me a little nervous though.
