Multi-Site and BP

    Hi,

I’m setting up a BuddyPress installation as a favor for a local high school. The idea is to have BuddyPress/Courseware working for any teacher that wants to take advantage of it, along with the option for teachers to create their own blogs if they desire it.

I am using the latest version of WP with Multi-Site enabled via the “Enable Mult-Site” plugin. I have checked the wp-config file and it is setup to allow for Multi-Site. I have also setup a wildcard domain.

I went ahead and set up three BuddyPress groups on the main WP installation. I also setup one subdomain blog.

Here’s my potential problem: When I go to SuperAdmin –> Sites, I see five sites: the primary WP installation, one subdomain blog (Multi-Site) and three sites with distinct Blog ID numbers, but sharing the same Domain name as the primary WP installation.

The last three sites correspond to BuddyPress groups that I created as a test. When I click on “Backend” from the SuperAdmin –> Sites listing, I get a “Page Not Found” page from within my site. If I click “Edit” from the same Sites listing, I am brought into the dashboard for the specific BP group.

Other than the multiple listings of the same domain name and the “Page Not Found” issue, the groups and the network seem to be working fine. But I’m very worried that this could be a problem down the road if my setup is flawed.

I hope that makes sense. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Yup, those are abnormal behaviors for a WP multisite installation.

I would suggest that you make a backup of files and database, then re-install from scratch – clean wp-config.php, delete .htaccess file and drop database tables. I would suggest not using “Enable Multisite Plugin” and Create a Network manually. Get your feet wet already with the nitty gritty.

Read this BP Codex article – Before installing BuddyPress – specifically about double checking WP “wellness” before activating BuddyPress https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/#wp-configuration for a less bumpy road to BP social site.

Ok great. Thanks so much for this information. I will let you know how it goes.

Is it better to enable Multi-Site first? If I recall, I think I downloaded BuddyPress/Courseware and then I enabled Multi-Site. Maybe that was part of the problem?

    Thanks again!

    1) Check that single WP is working then enable Multisite.
    2) Do the WP config checks recommended in Codex article.
    3) Install and activate BuddyPress. Check functionality of BP components.
    4) Then install and activate BuddyPress Courseware. If you find some issues, you can see whether others have had same problem as you have and find resolution OR create a new topic in plugin’s group forums at https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-courseware/forum/

I uninstalled and reinstalled WP, MultiSite and BP. Everything is working now. Thanks for your help.

The problem was probably caused by one of two things:

    1) I originally had installed BP first and then enabled Multi-Site.

    or

    2) My domain already has several “Add-on Domains” setup as subdomains on this domain. Hostgator tech support doesn’t think that will affect a Multi-Site installation with subdomains, but I’m not so sure. To be safe, I used subdirectories on this new installation.

    Thanks again!
