Is it possible to have the WordPress and BuddyPress installed in a different directory to where the site will display e.g. the files are here http://domain.com/wordpress/ but have the site showing on the root domain e.g. http://domain.com/ ?

I’ve attempted this following the WordPress install details here and have followed these instructions:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

However the BuddyPress install (navigation links, headers etc) are all still pointing to the domain.com/wordpress directory.

Is there a “URL for this site” setting for BuddyPress or a work-around?

There isn’t a specific setting, no. I’m unsure if we’ve been unable to do anything about this issue in the upcoming 1.3 release (I don’t think we did).

Double-checked this for a friend, BuddyPress does not work where WordPress is given its own directory. I figured the rationale was one cannot create a network with that set up https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network#WordPress_Settings_Requirements. I just moved WP to physical subdomain and it was good to go
