Building BuddyPress on top of Exisiting WordPress site

I have a WordPress site utilizing a magazine theme [ http://www.bluesasianetwork.com ]. I am considering building a fully developed BuddyPress installation as a subdomain, i.e. community.bluesasianetwork.com — but I am not sure if this is an advisable route. I guess that would make for an awkward structure for blogs within the community, with a blog having a URL like blog.community.bluesasianetwork.com

I would appreciate any advice from others who have installed a BuddyPress site as a sub-domain.
